Survival of Creative Documentaries is at Stake

The survivability of any species is contingent on the survivability of its
habitat. Whole swathes of the single documentary habitat on UK channels
have been destroyed over the past decade - we are all aware of the dramatic
elimination of such strands in the BBC schedules during this time. When the
final remaining habitat is attacked then inevitably extinction threatens.

Storyville is the last surviving habitat of the creative single documentary on
the BBC, and because of that, its importance and impact is out of all
proportion to its size. At a risibly small £2.2 million a year, the Storyville
budget is a tiny, insignificant part of the BBC's £3 billion budget.

The creative oasis which is Storyville will be destroyed if the planned cuts are
sanctioned by the BBC and the strand turned into a shadow of itself as an
acquisition strand. Most will simply not be made.
