A Showcase for Talent: Storyville is the only place on the BBC where
entirely new entrants, such as graduates of the NFTS, are given
opportunities to make programmes for the BBC alongside and on equal terms
with some of the truly great practitioners of the form. The fact that so many
directors, whether new entrants or long-established, aspire to work for
Storyville is another indication of its profound importance. And we mustn't
forget it is virtually the only place on the BBC where great international
filmmakers, like Werner Herzog, Kevin MacDonald and DA Pennebaker, have
produced work under the BBC's editorial guidance.

We believe that it is difficult to overstate the importance to young
filmmakers of having something to aspire to. Storyville is a rare place in the
current broadcasting environment, a place to take special ideas and original
styles that do not conform to the current format-led and schedule driven
output we see today. This is borne out by the international acclaim the
strand has garnered over the years.
