Why Cuts Now? The BBC has just completed a lengthy negotiation with the Government over its new Charter and licence fee. The government did agree future increases in the licence fee but not to the level the BBC says it needs to fund all its services and the costs of the coming government-required digital switchover. The gap between what the BBC says it needs and the amount the government is granting it through the licence fee is roughly 3%. Hence the need for cuts. Have The Cuts Been Confirmed? The BBC's internal review is not yet complete. All we know is that sometime this autumn, Mark Thompson, the BBC's Director General, will take the results of the internal spending review to the BBC Trust for their approval.
